The power of mundane things in life

Have you ever felt waking up every morning at the same time, going to the same job, doing the same routine that makes you feel tired and weary? You think this is so ordinary, boring, and nothing is significant about it. How could I possibly see and experience God’s great plans in this mundane everyday routine?

Let me tell you, Do not underestimate the power of mundane things in life.

I was almost at the end of my one-year internship in Denmark. My clock is ticking, and questions about what I will do next are constantly on my mind. It was another typical workday, the same routine of work and meetings scheduled for the day. But something special happened!

Every two weeks, we have a regular one-to-one conversation with our managers to discuss how things are and a time to share wisdom and mentor. In that particular session, My manager and I casually talked about my future plans, and I told him I would like to stay in this country if possible and look for an opportunity that fits my talents. But I had no clue where to start from.

Immediately, we worked out a talent chart sorting out that I have these characteristics, which would be an excellent fit for this job opportunity that was currently on-premise. That particular conversation helped me decide on the next big career move I have to make!

Similarly, in the bible, we read about how Eliezer looks for a potential bride for his master’s son, Isaac. He prayed a simple prayer before he started on his journey. His prayer was, “ See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this, I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”  Genesis 24: 13- 14. NIV

Now, Rebecca neither has a clue about the purpose of Eliezer’s journey nor his prayer. She was just doing her everyday mundane task of fetching water. The same old routine for who knows how long she has been doing. But on this particular day, she met with Eliezer.

This little incident on an ordinary day, in her ordinary routine, led her to find her future husband, Isaac, through Eliezer.

Sometimes we ask God what the will for my life and future is. It’s simple. Be present in the present so he can guide you to your next step.

“But God, this is not supposed to be like this. I expected something big. It is not flashy enough to be appreciated.”

God is a great orchestrator of doing great things with our ordinary life moments.

  • Moses was tending his father-in-law’s flock when God decided to talk to him
  • Ruth was picking up leftover grains when she met Boaz, her guardian-redeemer
  • David was tending his father’s sheep when he was called out to be ordained.

Things like a conversation with a friend, picking up groceries, helping an old neighbor, taking a walk in nature might lead you to the next bigger step that you need to take.

In all these ordinary moments, just when you are doing chores of your everyday life, you could get a new job opportunity, meet your spouse, or simply spark an idea for your future. Do not despise the day of small things.
